The Advantages And Pleasure Of Breastfeeding!

With all of the new developments in science and medicine, breastfeeding still remains the one and only best way to give a newborn a head start in life. It is a natural and beautiful interaction between mother and baby that can never be taken away, and many studies find that a powerful bond develops that will stay with mother and child throughout life. Breast milk is also the best source for nutrients and antibodies that baby to fight infection and illness in infancy and early childhood.

While breastfeeding may be the most natural act between mother and baby, it isn’t always the easiest. Here are a few guidelines to follow when first starting out:

Be sure to sit in a comfortable position with the back straight and the lap flat. Many mothers use a pillow to support their arm comfortably while feeding.

The proper position for baby to breastfeed in is with their body turned towards the mother’s, with baby’s bottom resting in mom’s elbow, and baby’s upper body supported by the forearm and opposite hand.

Many babies have a hard time latching on the first few times but with a little patience it can be achieved. Position baby’s nose directly in front of the nipple and allow their head to tip back slightly. Gently rub baby’s lips against the nipple until their mouth opens wide. At this point mom should bring baby’s lip and chin against the breast allowing baby to breathe easily, and swallow regularly and slowly.

It may also be necessary for mom to support the breast so baby can feed comfortably, though it is also important that mom stay comfortable. Breastfeeding should be a relaxed exchange between mother and baby, not a tense and uncomfortable chore. If something doesn’t feel right, do not hesitate to stop and start over.

Once both mom and baby get the hang of breastfeeding it will become a time both will enjoy. If there is still trouble, however, do not hesitate to ask for help. There are many support groups that exist to aid breastfeeding mothers, and some can even provide a member in-home to teach mom and baby the proper technique. The best advice for the new mom breastfeeding is to be patient. While it may be the most natural of occurrences, it still takes time to master for both mom and baby. Keep in mind that breastfeeding can be made difficult if switching between breast milk and formula. It’s also important for mom to eat healthfully when breastfeeding as everything that goes into her body will also transfer to the breast milk.
