In recent years the interest in motor sports has trickled down to younger generations who have now fueled the growth of children motor scooter drivers. Kids younger than 10-years-old have become enthusiasts of riding scooters. These designs are created to imitate luxury vehicles and classic cars. For the most part the exterior casing is what makes the design what it is. The engine and other functioning parts are very similar or identical to other scooters.

Children are not going to drive their motor scooters on streets as a regular vehicle, but safety equipment laws are in place, similar to those set for commuter scooters. The laws and regulations will vary in each state, but in most areas a mandatory helmet law has been set, usually for children under 14-years-old. To enforce the importance that children wear proper safety equipment, some areas issue $50 tickets or fines to violators of the rule. Laws working this way will most likely allow the fine to be dropped if a parent or guardian can prove a helmet has been purchased for the child after receiving the ticket.

RSS for the Rest of Us

I don’t know about you, but I’m seeing a whole bunch of articles and websites telling me that I need to get into this RSS thing.

Is it really time?

RSS (it stands for “Really Simple Syndication”) is the latest wave of internet technology designed to take advantage of the “Content is King” mentality. Imagine getting direct access to the content you want, without having to give out your personal information. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Here’s how it works: You find a website you like and look for the little orange XML button, or a link that says “Syndicate this site”. When you click that link, you get the raw feed of content from that site.

An example:
My Simplified Selling site allows you to syndicate my content. That means you don’t have to remember to visit my site to discovers articles of interest, but instead they are fed to your preferred RSS reader (more on this in a moment) at your behest.

That means you no longer have to open your browser and visit a particular website to see what’s new, to find out if anything interesting has been posted. All you have to do is open your RSS reader and content from all over the web is gathered into one place and presented for your review. An RSS reader is one-stop shopping for online information.

RSS Readers
There are hundreds of RSS readers on the market. You can collect RSS Feeds on your “My Yahoo!” page, or your “MyMSN” page. Current, updated content from your preferred sites is presented for your reading pleasure. Check the first few lines and if you’re interested, just click and you are instantly transported to that particular article. No more hunting around on a site looking for an article you like.

Newsgator (www.newsgator.com) is a third-party add-in that turns your Outlook mail client into an RSS reader. Not to be outdone, Microsoft has incorporated an RSS reader into the latest release of Outlook.

You can also get stand-alone RSS readers from Bloglines (www.bloglines.com) and RSSReader.com (www.rssreader.com). A quick Google search for “RSS Reader” returned over 2 million pages. You’ll have no trouble finding an RSS reader that you like.

But why?
That’s really the question. Of course we know why the internet folks want you to subscribe to their content, but why would the average websurfer want to go through the hassle of setting up and subscribing to RSS feeds?

Privacy
RSS feeds are more private than newsletters. Unlike when you subscribe to newsletters (where you must give your email address to the content provider so that the information can be emailed to you) when you subscribe to RSS Feeds, you don’t have to give your email address (or any personal information) to the site owner, because they aren’t mailing you their information.

Something to consider - it is possible that content providers will start asking for personal information when subscribing to an RSS feed. It hasn’t happened yet, so subscribe today before they start!

Portability
When I change email addresses or work on a different computer, I don’t lose the content I like, because my RSS reader is keeping track of the content I want to see - without the involvement of the content provider. It’s like radio stations on your Walkman. The station manager doesn’t know when you change the station and if you move across town, you don’t lose the stations. It’s all in your Walkman. When you’re using an online RSS reader (like My Yahoo! or MyMSN), your subscriptions are available from any computer, anywhere in the world.

No ‘Unsubscribe’ Headaches
When I’m tired of getting a newsletter, I am required to contact the publisher and “unsubscribe” to make the mailing stop. With RSS, you don’t have to interact with the website owner to get off the list. Simply click the button in your RSS reader and it will stop collecting data from that site. You are in complete control.

No More Spam
Today, RSS is pure content. Because you didn’t give out your email address to subscribe, you know that you won’t get spammed. The internet folks have an incentive to keep the feed relatively ad-free. While you’re reading their content in your RSS reader, if the content stops being interesting or becomes non-stop pitching, it is very easy for the reader (you) to disconnect. Most of these folks would rather keep you tuned in than to lose you forever.

Think of it like television. If “CSI: Crime Scene Investigations” becomes a long series of commercials and no plot, people will change the channel, many never to return. So the producers see to it that they have interesting content that keeps viewers returning for more. RSS will likely follow the same route.

Is Your CRM System Destined To Fail?

It’s time to put your trusty CRM software to work; to let it earn its keep. You’re about to blast an email out to several thousand potential customers. First you run a search of people and companies you want to target. You soon realize something’s wrong when your list is far smaller than anticipated. A quick check reveals many profiles have not been filled in or are missing email addresses. Further inspection shows numerous records are incorrect; others are riddled with typos. And that’s just for starters. With a sinking feeling, you realize this email blast isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

Time for some damage control or preventative maintenance

Fortunately one of the most common reasons cited for the high failure rate of CRM systems - poor data quality - is also one of the easiest to avoid. Your CRM software is only as good as the information it contains. As the old programmers motto goes ‘garbage in, garbage out’. So how can you avoid incomplete, incorrect, irrelevant or out-of-date and generally unfit-for-use data from permeating your CRM software?

You need to gather your key CRM users together and write a standard guideline document, defining the CRM system rules of use.

10 questions that should be addressed:

1. Identify who has what rights to the system; who can Create, Insert,
Modify or Delete records? Forward this information to your system
administrator to record.
2. Decide on a procedure to check for any duplicates before creating a
record. Depending on what ‘de-duping’ or ‘data scrubbing’ features your
system has, this might require some simple searches before starting a new
record.
3. Do you allow abbreviations or acronyms? For example: IBM, or I.B.M,
or International Business Machines Inc. A policy on ensuring consistency
of input will help to avoid duplications in future.
4. Are records going to be created in Upper and Lower case and when are
CAPS acceptable?
5. By when do you expect records, notes and so on to be created or
updated? Same day, on return to the office?
6. Is the primary address of clients to be created as a postal or a
physical address?
7. Make sure everyone checks spellings if they are unsure. When in
doubt, ask the client or Google it.
8. Make rules for creating new tabs or Custom Objects (as
salesforce.com CRM calls them.) Every time a new Custom Object is needed,
it should first be approved.
9. Ensure that email addresses are put in correctly. Basic but common
mistake!
10. Set up procedures, if not supported by your crm software, of how to
create records from inbound emails.

Once your document is finished, get everyone to sign off on it. As
standard practice, ensure that document is handed to all new employees at
your company.

How do I reinforce this as time goes on?
Try this: select a couple of records - both good and bad - every week, to
put on the overhead at staff meetings. Make sure you don’t unduly
embarrass anybody but watch this become the light-relief highlight of your
meetings! People learn best when having fun!

What if your database is in one unholy mess?
Has the rot set in so deeply that your database needs a complete overhaul?
Turn this seemingly insurmountable task into an opportunity to you. This
is an excellent excuse to re-establish contact with your clients and let
them know you care.

Importantly, help your staff understand what you need from the data to
facilitate more accurate marketing and reporting and hence the success of
your business and their careers.

By creating a sense of pride and ownership in the company database, you
are nurturing the essential process of buy-in, necessary for the success
of your CRM initiative. Don’t compromise this critical tool by allowing
your CRM software to be infected by inferior data.


Seven Ways to Generate Income From Your Website

If you own your own website, there are a variety of things you can do to generate extra income for yourself. To enjoy the most success for your efforts, you must take into consideration your existing website content, as well as your particular target audience. 6. Sell your own products or services. Of course, they should be related to your target audience. You will also want the ability to securely accept credit card payments directly from your website. Other forms of payment such as PayPal, ClickBank, etc. is also preferred. Delivery of your product should be as fast as possible.

7. Publish an e-zine from your website. Have people subscribe to the e-zine right from your web site. In addition to direct sales of products or services you are promoting, you could sell classified or sponsor advertising inside your e-zine.

Each of these ideas will generate income, but if you are a new website owner, I recommend starting with Google Adsense. These ads continue to grow in popularity and are easy to customize and install on your web pages-simply copy and paste a block of HTML.

For new internet home business entrepreneurs, in addition to Google Ads, you should also consider affiliate programs. Most affiliate programs are free to join and usually offer marketing tools and resources that are readily available for your use.
