The Perfect Pub - A Blueprint

On the rare occasion that I’m down the pub with my mates and the conversation runs dry we have a stock conversation topic that never fails to deliver animated controversy. How would we design our perfect pub? Carlsberg have touched upon the basics in their TV advert; beautiful barmaids, comfortable chairs and cold beer are a must. They are the core staples to make a pub great but we are striving for perfection and perfection is achieved in the details.

Bar Staff

A mixture of hot young Swedish girls that talk with a slight accent and friendly Eastern Europeans will be recruited to collect glasses. Martin Clunes and Ricky Gervais will be recruited to pull the pints and will be helped on a part time basis by TVs Bill Bailey. Shaun Slater from Eastenders, Tony Soprano and Evander "the real deal" Holyfield will work the door. The special one Jose Morinho will manage the bar on the owner Peggy Mitchell’s behalf and Stephen Fry will host the weekly pub quiz. In the event of the pub needing some nasty underhand work done Steve Buscemi will be employed.

Building

The building will be a traditional Ye Olde English chocolate box style building. It will preferably be thatched with a log fire for the winter. The beer garden will have a patio heater for every table in the winter and these will be replaced with patio umbrellas in the summer.

The BBQ section of the pub garden will feature a permanent pork spit roast that will serve up crackling and apple sauce as an optional side order to the traditional pork roll with stuffing. The tables in the beer garden will have a slight wobble for that truly authentic touch.

Location

Choosing the right location for the pub was a tricky decision. Early suggestions recommended Melbourne, Australia (on the off chance that the cast of neighbours would become regulars). Suggestions were also made that suggested that it be placed in Thailand, Cape Town, Tokyo, LA, or New York. General consensus swung to Hawaii (on a glorious white sandy beach within sight of, but safe distance from, a volcano that would erupt once every week). Eventually however we opted for placing it 7 minutes’ walk from my house. This was regardless of where ’my house’ was and would necessitate the use of teleportation technology for the building.

Services

One of the most contentious issues is whether or not to have big screen TVs plastering the walls. Final deliberation settled for a screen free bar except for mini screens in the toilets above the urinals. Wall sized super screens would be pulled down from the ceilings for big sporting events.

The biggest debate was whether or not to include a high end cocktail bar. After much consternation and the sampling of a few tequila daiquiris and a round of long island Ice teas it was eventually decided that it would be a good idea after all this is the modern world and we are modern men. Cocktails must include a cocktail umbrella.

Equipment

Each table will have its own fully stocked mini bar and swivel optic machine. The pub will also have a revolutionary donation payment system that will require the pub goer to make a reasonable donation into a bucket as they leave thus reducing the necessity of carrying pocketfuls of change this will also reduce expenditure on staff that will mean drinks will be cheaper.

The pub will also feature an amusement style grabber machine in the corner. Our version will not drop the prize you have skilfully selected for no reason whatsoever. 90% of the questions the pub quiz machine will ask will be answerable with only 10% requiring an ’educated guess’.

The pub will of course have the conventional weekly quiz. This quiz will however not feature girly celebrities, like that one from desperate Housewives, in the picture round. The bar will also feature a monster ice machine that will provide unlimited ice to the patrons.

The Online Business Scam

This may come as a shock to some people but not every online business opportunity is going to be legitimate. There was a lot of fraud going on in the world before the internet was ever heard of and the ability to take money from trusting souls all over the world, has spawned a whole new batch of fraudulent enterprises. While multilevel marketing can be a viable business model, they get a bad rap from people on the internet who are resorting back to pyramid schemes and the old faithful Ponzi scams, named after one of the biggest fraudulent businesses ever to hit main street.

There are red flags that should be raised about these fraudulent opportunities and common sense can help them be spotted. Unfortunately, they are generally aimed at very desperate people who are willing to try anything that promises big bucks in a very short period of time. The old saying that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, should be the first flag that runs up the pole.

When ads claim that they tried several dozen scam opportunities on the internet before they found the one real job opportunity that works, chances are it is another scam, hoping that other will believe their story and they can make enough money to move onto their next fraudulent endeavor. Thinking about the claims, if they were unemployed and had to spend up to $50 on every internet scam they fell for, that is a lot of money they threw away. The first thought should be what an idiot they never learn but usually they give out details how they are spending all the money they made.

The offer is usually advice on how to set up a website, just like mine to draw suckers in to send you money. With any luck your name will not end up on the list of internet scams or worse, on a state issued cease and desist order. In many cases the fraud is up front. You send money to a website and get nothing in return. After a couple of days, you go back to the site for the promised full refund and find it no longer exists.

Before sending any money for any opportunity, spend some time researching the opportunity. Is there a phone number to call with questions? Call it and see how it is answered. Is there a physical address, not just a P.O. box. Go to the postal services website and verify the address. Is there a way to contact those talking heads in the testimonials? If not, they may not really exist. If you have to send money before getting any of the details, question the offer. The time spent researching the opportunities could end up being money in the bank or at least keeping your money in your bank.

Bad Breath - What Causes Bad Breath

Having bad breath can change your life for the worse, both personally and professionally. And the grim truth is people most often won’t tell you; they’ll just gossip and snicker behind your back. There’s no doubt about it - bad breath is bad news. However, there is a way to handle this issue. But the first thing you must do is discover the root cause of this problem.

The Most Common Causes of Bad Breath

Do you suffer from "morning breath"? Many people who suffer from bad breath have discovered that the morning is the worst time for them. If you’re one of these people then you wake up with a foul odor emanating from your mouth that subsides after the morning brushing of your teeth. But as the days wears on, that smell slowly crawls back into your mouth and people are once again avoiding you like you have the plague.

Occasionally the cause of bad breath could be due to what you ingest or put in your mouth. We all know what someone’s breath smells like after they’ve eaten a meal that included garlic or onions. Pungent food is a classic cause of foul breath. And so is smoking. If you just love cigars or can’t go a day without taking a puff of your favorite brand of cigarette, this will cause bad breath for sure. And let’s not forget everyone’s favorite vice - alcohol. Beverages containing alcohol are well known to cause unpleasant breath.

Masking Won’t Help in the Worst Cases

People often try to cover up their bad breath by using various fresheners. These often take the form of gums, mints and sprays. These fresheners can cover up the odor for several minutes or maybe an hour. If the smell was caused by something you ate, then this tactic might work since the foul breath is only temporary to begin with. But if the chief cause is more serious such as poor oral hygiene, the fresheners will only mask the problem and not eliminate it. The terrible breath will only return.

Chronic bad breath is known as halitosis. If your breath is bad all the time, regardless of what you eat or drink, then your problem is indeed chronic. Many times this is caused by bacteria living in your mouth. The best way to get rid of it is by careful brushing and flossing. And don’t think for a moment mouthwash can take the place of flossing. As long as food particles are left in your mouth, bacteria can act on them to decay your teeth and give you bad breath. No mouthwash in the world can "neutralize" those food particles…only flossing can remove them. When choosing toothpaste, look for those than contain baking soda and peroxide as their main ingredients.

Bad breath can be conquered, but not by ignoring the problem. First, recognize you have a problem then set out to beat it. You’ll feel confident and be more confident around people.

Personal Branding - How To Label Yourself For Career Promotion

Too often job seekers send out resumes without a focus or message that speaks to the reader. They include all of their jobs going back many years with an extensive list of job responsibilities.

What they fail to do is convey their unique personal brand or value proposition to a hiring manager that clearly demonstrates what it is they do best - even better than anyone else!

When you think about a product, what comes to mind? It is the look, feel, smell, performance, quality, or low cost? Whatever it is, that is what sets it apart from similar products. Not surprisingly, it is probably the one thing a company aggressively promotes about the product.

If a company is buying a candidate, that in turn makes the candidate the product and the hiring company the consumer. So, the same would be true when setting yourself apart from other job seekers in your field.

Why should a company choose you when they have ten other candidates with similar career paths?

If you know the answer to that question, then that is your personal brand! If not, then you need to find out what it is.

Here are some simple steps to get started:

STEP 1: Research Your Personal Brand

Conduct a marketing survey by asking your friends, family, and past co-workers what they think of you on a personal and professional level. You might be surprised at the responses, good and bad! For this exercise, we are going to focus on the positive.

STEP 2: Define Your Personal Brand

Here are a few general examples to help you translate the feedback to your personal brand (parenthesis):

Workaholic (hardworking, determined, ambitious, driven)

Always busy doing something (project oriented; multitask oriented; energetic).

Someone to turn to when advice is needed (good listener with consultative skills; problem solver).

Someone to count on in a pinch (reliable; team player).

Frugal; knows how to stretch the mighty dollar (budget conscious).

Handy around the house and in the yard (technically or mechanically inclined; good with tools).

STEP 3: Market Your Personal Brand

Okay, you are probably wondering what you are supposed to do with the information once you have it, and how you can apply it to your resume (your marketing tool) to brand youself.

In step 2, you were provided with general examples in various areas. If these responses revealed a common thread with the same qualities listed from nearly everyone you surveyed, you can start building your personal brand around that message.

Let suppose one of the areas most noted in your survey results indicated that you are "always busy doing something." That could possible translate to "project oriented." If you determine that the position you are seeking requires that skill set, then you can use it.

If this were the case, then you will need to think back to all of the positions you have held involving special projects that went beyond the daily routine, and list the project highlights.

Be sure to show how you managed all aspects of the projects. Do not just list the project type.

This way you can target a project-oriented position in almost any field. Armed with your valuable feedback and experience, you can show your interests and skills to convey you are either qualified or positioned to transition to that role.

For example, if you are seeking a construction site project manager position or an IT project management position, the focus of your personal brand message should start with the job title.

You should prominently display the job title in all caps such as PROJECT MANAGER followed by a great Career Profile followed by a keywords category to show the reader that you are indeed about project management.

Somewhere under Professional Experience, you should take it to the next level by emphasizing you projects under a Project Highlights section.

Keywords could include project management, team leadership, crew scheduling, budget control, inventory control, purchasing, equipment installation, systems integration, regulatory compliance, performance measurement, quality assurance, and so forth.

Using this branding technique will help you to connect with the reader. This exercise will also help you to decide what you really want to do and will prepare you for interviews.

We have used Project Manager to illustrate the process. However, the same steps apply to any field or occupation. Whatever it is that people express about you, you need to translate that to a work skill and identify what you have done in your work history that falls under that category if you are looking for a position in that line of work.

We all have many qualities and unique experiences. The mistake people make on their resumes is to either list too little or too much. Even worse, they do not focus on their key strengths and core competencies. If you fail to emphasize your key strengths and core competencies specific to the job you are targeting, you are failing to brand yourself effectively.

It is all in the packaging. Make sure you figure out what your brand message is and promote yourself around that concept so you can compete with the best of them and negotiate your buying price. Translation: top salary!

Would You Borrow $80bn From This Man ?

In the aftermath of the disastrous run on the Northern Rock Bank during September 2007, the Bank of England began to realize the enormity of the calamity which had unfolded.

Instead of pumping money into the banking sector in order to avert the impending liquidity crisis, the Governor of the Bank of England signalled to the markets that banks which have become weakened by imprudent actions may be allowed to fail.

When the run on Northern Rock was eventually halted by a government guarantee to all depositors, there was pressure on the Bank of England to act in order to ensure that no other bank would be at risk.

Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank, announced on 19 September a series of auctions designed to provide loan funds for a period of 3 months. The funds would be secured on a flexible package of collateral, including mortgages. The rate of interest would be 6.75%. US$20bn was on offer on each of the 4 auctions, during the period 26 September to 17 October, making a total of US$80bn.

Financial markets have been rife with rumours that several other UK banks are at risk. The most likely candidate appears to be Alliance and Leicester whose share price has fallen from GBP11 to GBP6 during 2007. The cause of the problem is the same as Northern Rock, namely, it requires significant funds from the wholesale market in order to top up money held from depositors. However, there are persistent rumours that larger banks, such as Barclays, are in trouble.

If these banks are in such dire straits, it is remarkable that there were no applications received by the Bank of England for the US$80bn of funds on offer.

Admittedly, the funds were being offered at around 6.75%. Compared to the bank rate of 5.75% and interbank rates of around 6.2%, the interest rate was not generous. However, if borrowing money at 6.75% for 3 months, and possibly longer, could ensure the survival of a bank and allow the directors to sleep at night, it is surprising that there was not a single applicant.

In a slightly different context, if homeowners, who had defaulted on mortgage capital repayments, were offered an interest only loan of 6.75% for 3 months, the offer would have been welcomed, and home repossessions would be reduced dramatically.

The reason why no-one responded to Mervyn King’s offer is due to the collapse in confidence and credibility of the Bank of England.

Mervyn King justified the Bank of England’s lack of intervention with respect to Northern Rock by reference to ’Moral Hazard’. By this the Governor meant that he did not wish to send a signal to other banks and financial institutions that the Bank of England would bale them out should they experience difficulties in the future due to poor policies or imprudent lending.

While it is useful for the Governor to caution banks against the dangers of risky business models and the dubious practice of making loans to customers with low credit status, it is singularly inappropriate for him to make such remarks during a banking crisis.

Prior to the crisis at Northern Rock becoming public, it is clear that Lloyds TSB wished to initiate buyout talks. It appears that they were seeking a Bank of England loan of up to GBP20bn over 2 years. This sum was roundly rejected. With the benefit of hindsight, this was a reasonable offer from Lloyds TSB as the Bank of England has subsequently handed Northern Rock some GBP28bn and the crisis remains far from over.

While Mervyn King was considering ’Moral Hazard’, both the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve were quietly increasing liquidity in financial markets. Indeed on September 19th, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 0.5% from 5.25 to 4.75. This was followed by another cut at the end of October to 4.5%.

In addition to the stupidity of the policy, talk of ’Moral Hazard’ seems a little peculiar. If the Bank of England was planning to open a massage parlour or lap dancing club in Threadneedle Street, then this may well constitute a moral hazard for Mr King and his colleagues at the Bank of England.

Mr King also made several references to the desirably of ’Covert Action’ in dealing with the Northern Rock crisis, but claimed that he was prevented from acting in this way by UK legislation. This was an odd claim as neither Mr King nor his colleagues are on record as pointing this out during their 10 years of independence from the UK Treasury. Perhaps Mr King was slightly befuddled and was confusing his role with that of MI5 or the CIA.

However, the main impediment to any bank taking up the Governor’s offer was that the guarantee of confidentiality was not deemed to be worth the paper it was written on. Based on the culture of blame and leaks from the tripartite agencies of the Bank of England, the Financial Services Authority and the UK Treasury, no bank was prepared to take the risk of borrowing a large sum from the Bank of England.

The essence of banking is confidence. Unless depositors consider their funds to be safe, there will be a run on any bank, no matter who it may be.

Should a bank’s need for cash become public, then the bank may unwittingly invite a run on its funds. A leak from the Bank of England would transform a crisis into a disaster. The bank would become a second Northern Rock.

A Record Company Defined

A music contract is a printed document that outlines, categorizes, explains, defines, and administrates the company relationship between an artist or group, and a record label. The music contract is called an executory agreement because it is yet to be performed or acted upon. To better grasp this type of relationship between an artist and label, it is essential to comprehend what it is that a record company does. A record company is an venture whose business activities usually include some or all of the following things:

I. Reporting to the Internal Revenue Service all royalties, contractor fees, salaries, commissions, interests, rents, pensions, insurance programs, direct sales of products for resale, and other compensations paid out to all artists and employees of that particular company.

II. Public Relations or PR work for the artists that have signed music contracts with their business.

III. Publishing or sub-publishing of records and works.

IV. Promotion, Publicity, Manufacturing and/or Distribution of albums and other materials.

V. Producing and/or Releasing commercial recordings of signed bands and artists.

VI. Scouting and signing talent with music contracts.

VII. Obtaining Rights to materials through the use of music contracts. These are including but not limited to songs, videos and master records.

VIII. Securing licenses of every kind.

IX. Distributing royalties obtained through the release of records, profits from touring and sale of merchandise all defined by the signed music contract of individual groups or artists.

Record labels come in all shapes and sizes and exist mainly to make a profit, as any business. With that in mind, labels search for talent they are sure will succeed in the music industry and they secure this talent by way of music contracts or recording contracts.

Signing an artist is risky and an expensive business so record companies want to be absolutely sure they have the best and most unique talent out there. Remember, every right a record company has pertaining to your work comes directly from the content of the music contract you sign. Always keep this in mind.

Now that you have a better idea of what a record label is and does, you can consider yourself closer to being ready to sign a music contract of your own. A music contract contains many clauses and covers a wide range of agreements. Just be sure you know full and well what you are doing before you sign any legal document!

Negotiating Music Contracts

No matter who you are, from the get-go, music contract terms are negotiable. If you are just starting out in the music industry, it is all a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry, it is possible for a "newbie" to receive a fair music contract from a dependable label.

The first thing you have to keep in mind is that in this industry everyone is looking out for themselves first. Even honest labels are going to try to negotiate for their best interests. Beware of the dishonest companies that do not keep the artist in mind at all in the music contract negotiation process. This is why your education and experience with music contracts is so crucial.

One common thing to look out for when discussing music contracts is when you are asked to sign a standard music contract. They may even try to tell you that this is just a formality and everyone signs this particular document. A red flag should pop up in your head, especially if you are told this is your chance of a lifetime. You and your career is unique and so
should be your music contract.

No matter what, you should always ask questions if you have them. If you do this and the label suggest you are insinuating that they are not being upfront with you then they probably are not being upfront. It is your right to ask any question and if it puts your music contract deal in jeopardy then you should ponder why that is. The answer is that this is not an honest company and maybe you should look elsewhere. Don’t compromise your career just to sign with someone.

Let them see that you are not just a desperate artist ready to sign on any dotted line. Ask for time to read over the contract with a legal representative or trusted acquaintance. It is imperative that you understand every aspect of the music contract at hand.

You may consider hiring an entertainment lawyer but they are very expensive. If you are someone who can afford this then by all means go for it but most struggling artists cannot. This is o.k. You do not have to hire an attorney to look over your music contract. It is possible to do this on your own or with the help of a friend, manager or family member.

The goal here is to negotiate a fair music contract with a legitimate record label. If a company is honest and forthright then they will be willing to answer any question and explain every clause. Don’t just sign because you are desperate to be a signed artist. Sometimes a signed artist is just as bad off as a solo struggling musician when they have signed a bad deal! Be smart and good luck!

The Basics of Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is one of the B-Complex vitamins and is also known as Cobalamin. It is important for the normal functioning of the brain, nervous system and for the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B-12 helps keep the red blood cells healthy which helps prevent heart disease and helps keep the immune system functioning at its maximum level. It is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting the DNA synthesis and regulation.

Vitamin B-12 is also essential in fatty acid synthesis and energy production or the process that converts the carbohydrates, fats and proteins from food into energy. This vitamin is also important in maintaining the nervous system. All nerves are surrounded by a fatty protective covering made up of a complex protein called myelin.

If a deficiency occurs, DNA production is disrupted and abnormal cells are produced. This results in anaemia. Symptoms of anaemia include excessive tiredness, breathlessness, listlessness, pallor, and poor resistance to infection. Other symptoms might include a smooth, sore tongue and menstrual disorders. Prolonged deficiency can lead to nerve degeneration and irreversible neurological damage.

When a deficiency occurs, it’s most commonly linked to a failure to effectively absorb the vitamin from the intestine rather than a dietary deficiency. Vitamin B-12 is bound to the protein in food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases Vitamin B-12 from proteins in foods during digestion.

Absorption of Vitamin B-12 requires the secretion from the cells lining the stomach of a glycoprotein, known as intrinsic factor. The intrinsic factor complex is then absorbed in the small intestine in the presence of calcium. Certain people are unable to produce intrinsic factor and the subsequent anaemia is treated with injections of Vitamin B-12.

The old Recommended Daily Amounts (RDA’s) have been replaced by the term Reference Nutrient intake (RNI). The RNI is the amount of nutrient which is enough for at least 97% of the population.

Reference Nutrient Intakes for Vitamin B-12, micrograms/day by age.

- 0 to 6 months 0.3 micrograms
- 7 to 12 months 0.4 micrograms
- 1 to 3 yrs 0.5 micrograms
- 4 to 6 yrs 0.8 micrograms
- 7 to 10 yrs 1.0 micrograms
- 11 to 14 yrs 1.2 micrograms
- 15 + yrs 1.5 micrograms
- Breast feeding women 2.0 micrograms

The vitamin has very low toxicity and exceeding the RNI is not considered to be dangerous.

The only verified unfortified sources of Vitamin B-12 are meat, dairy products and eggs. There has been plenty of research into possible plant food sources like soya products, seaweeds and algae, but analysis found no significant Vitamin B-12.

Strict vegetarians or vegans are likely to require supplements if they do not eat any animal products. Some sources of Vitamin B-12 for vegetarians are dairy products, free-range eggs, milk, vegetarian cheddar cheese, hard boiled eggs. Many vegan foods are actually supplemented with Vitamin B-12. These include yeast extracts, Vecon vegetable stock, veggieburger mixes, textured vegetable protein, soya milks, vegetable and sunflower margarines, and breakfast cereals.
