How To Install Your Own Flat Roof

Believe it or not there are some roofs that you can install yourself providing you have the proper equipment. There are so many advantages of a DIY flat roof such as you only have to pay for materials and not labour and you can get it done at your own pace. This means that if you want it done really quickly you can as you don’t have to wait for builders to become free.

For your very own DIY flat roof follow the guide below for a successful installation.

Firstly and very importantly, sweep the roof clear of any loose chippings and debris and check for any damages. This is very important otherwise your DIY flat roof is going to have bumps in it which over time can affect its performance.

Next, underlay should be fitted to the flat area of the roof and if it’s designed to flow off into a flat roof gutter, you will need to attach a skirting to the front of the facia.

Position the rubber sheet about half a foot from the gutter edge and staple or tack to the outside edge of the sheet. Your roof should be starting to look like you’re making progress.

Whilst the batten is on the roof, drape the rubber sheet down the wall and nail or screw the sheet through the batten so that it is level with the roof. The sheet should then be brought back over to form a secure internal fixing for your roof.

If your roof adjoins the wall of the house, this can be bonded up the wall and into the seam between the brickwork. If the flat roof adjoins a pitched roof then the rubber membrane needs to be taken up under the tiles and fixed to the roof timbers.

Once the rubber membrane has been fixed into place, you need to ballast the roof. You can either do this by using gravel or lightweight patio flags as long as your DIY flat roof is suitable.

Maintaining your DIY flat roof should be easy but some roofs with details on them can be tricky. All in all installing your very own DIY flat roof is cheaper than hiring someone, can be quicker if you know what you’re doing, you don’t have to have strangers walking around your home and when you’re finished installing your DIY flat roof you are sure to be proud of all your hard work.
