A person’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) refers to the number of calories his or her body burns while at rest. The human body needs some calories simply to breathe, pump blood, and maintain body temperature. It represents the minimum number of calories an individual needs to survive in the absence of any activity. Literally, basal metabolic rate represents the quantity of calories needed just to stay in bed and sleep all day.

The higher a person’s BMR, the more calories that individual burns off without engaging in any physical activity. This may vary significantly from one person to another. An individual’s BM rate is partially grounded in genetics. Men typically have a rate than women, because they tend to naturally have both a greater muscle mass and a lower percentage of body fat.

Hormonal factors can also impact a persons basal metabolic rate. Thyroxin, which is produced by the thyroid gland, is a very important factor in basal metabolic rate. If a person does not produce a sufficient quantity of thyroxin, his or her BMR will slow. If too much thyroxin is produced, these rates can increase by as much as 100 percent. This is the reason that untreated thyroid problems can lead to extreme weight fluctuations. Fortunately, thyroxin imbalances can be controlled by medication for most people.

Additionally, regardless of gender or other genetic factors, some people naturally have slower metabolisms, and others have higher basal metabolic rates. In addition to the impact of hereditary factors, a persons BMR also can change significantly with age and/or activity level. Generally speaking, the more lean body mass a person has, the higher his or her basal metabolic rate can be. Conversely, as body fat percentage increases, basal metabolic rate decreases.

One of the reasons that cardiovascular exercise and weight training play such an important role in weight loss is that these two activities can increase a persons BM rate. The reason that people have a tendency to gain weight as they age if their exercise levels do not increase, is that BM rate tends to decrease as they age and naturally begin to lose lean muscle mass. After the age of 20, basal metabolic rate tends to decrease by about two percent each year. If calorie consumption remains constant but exercise levels do not increase, weight gain will occur as basal metabolic rate declines with age.

Individuals who are overweight or obese have a high risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. A person that is overweight should try to avoid gaining additional weight and increase their daily activity level.

Additionally, if you are overweight with other risk factors (such as high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high blood pressure), you should try to lose weight. Even a small weight loss (just 10% of your current weight) may help in lowering the risk of disease. In order to lose weight, you simply need to increase your daily activity or consume fewer calories than those needed to maintain your weight.

For those in Ontario, there are some standards and options that are part of standardized insurance policies for that area. For example, income replacement benefits are available for a wage earner who becomes injured in an accident. The standard weekly income replacement benefit is a maximum of $400 per week, but if your income is higher than this, you can purchase additional coverage that will increase your weekly benefits to $600, $800, or $1,000. For those who do not quality for either income replacement or caregiver benefits, you are eligible for $185 every two weeks, if you are injured severely enough that you cannot perform your normal daily routine.

If you are a full-time caregiver who is disabled because of an accident, you can receive $250 per week for the first dependent and $50 for each additional dependent. You can also purchase additional coverage to increase your benefits to $325 per week for one dependent and $75 per week for each additional dependent. Dependent care benefits are also available at an additional cost for those who are employed at the time of the accident and must pay for someone to take care of the children because of the accident. This optional benefit pays $75 per week for the first child and $25 for each additional dependent.

Other benefits include medical and rehabilitation benefits, attendant care benefits, and death and funeral benefits. For those who are involved in an accident, it’s good to know that there is a source of payment for all of the ongoing care that one may need after a serious accident. This is especially true of the income replacement provisions, because even if you have health insurance to cover the medical expenses, or rely on the National Health program, that only covers medical expenses. If you are disabled because of the accident, you need more than just payment for medical expenses.

In many areas of the policy, you can increase the standard coverage to an amount that is more compatible to your needs. If you make $600 a week, a maximum of $400 is not going to cover your bills, let alone your standard of living. You have to look at the entire picture when you first obtain quotes for your car insurance. You must be sure that you have enough coverage in case of an accident that causes you to become disabled. Even if you don’t think you’ll have an accident that’s your fault, cover yourself. In all likelihood, if you don’t have the coverage, you’ll have an accident with someone who has no insurance, and thus, no way for you to collect.

Some of the coverage may not apply to you or appear necessary, but even if you are the primary wage earner, look at the possibility that your spouse may be involved in an accident and need someone to take care of the children while you are work. Never shortchange yourself or your family because you think it can’t happen to you’even if you’ve never had an accident in your life.

I’ve been a social worker for more than ten years. During that time, I’ve worked in the emergency room of a major trauma center, a skilled nursing facility specializing in the care of people with Alzheimer’s and most recently a hospice. I love my job and even if I get frustrated at times, no amount of money could persuade me to quit social work.

Just because I love my community service job, however, does not mean that community service is the right career choice for everyone. If you are considering a career in community service, ask yourself the following questions:

#1. What kind of training and background do I have?

Social work is a profession for those with a strong desire to help improve people’s lives. Many community service workers have degrees in social work, counseling, psychology, nursing, or another related field.

But don’t despair if you have only a high school diploma or a GED. You may be able to enter the field as an assistant or a "designee." Many nursing facilities, for instance, can not afford to hire social workers so they train a person with savvy and people skills to act as the "social service designee." Although not a trained social worker, this person takes on most of the work social workers do in a facility such as admissions, applications for financial assistance, and discharge planning.

#2. What do I want from a job?

If your answers included themes like money, power, and prestige, you would be wise to give community service work a second thought. Although you can make a solid salary as a community service worker, you will not get rich, nor will you find yourself being interviewed by Oprah or Dave Letterman.

If, on the other hand, your answers included themes of wanting to help people, or at least a specific group of people, or wanting to make your corner of the world a better place, you are probably on the right track with a community service job.

#3. What are the working hours I’m available for?

Full-time social workers most often work a 40 hour week, however, there may be a need to work evenings or weekends to meet with clients or handle emergencies. In voluntary nonprofit environments, part-time work is most standard. While most time is spent in a facility or office, they may be required to travel locally to visit clients, meet with service providers or attend meetings.

#4. Can I handle taboo subjects?

If you are a community service worker, you will have to deal with issues that make the majority of citizens uncomfortable. For instance, nurses and social workers were holding the hands of dying AIDS patients years before the president of the United States could bring himself to say the word AIDS.

As a community service worker, you will routinely be encountering issues such as death, mental illness, child abuse, domestic violence, and substance abuse. You will also have to work with people from all sorts of different backgrounds and lifestyles. Would you be comfortable with a client of a different race? Religion? Sexual orientation?

If you have or are willing to seek out the proper training, want a job that will allow you to make a real difference in the world, and are able to handle difficult subjects and differences, you would probably make an ideal community services worker. Best of luck with your career!

Cold therapy is an age-old method for treating chronic pain and injuries. Cold therapy treats the affected area by slowing down the blood flow to that area, which in turn, helps to reduce inflammation, muscle spasms, and pain. If you have ever sprained an ankle or suffered a torn muscle, you know how much better a cold compress can make it feel.

Massage therapy, on the other hand, treats injury and helps to relax muscles by working on the tissue itself. Massage can help to relieve psychological stress, improve the mood, manage various levels of pain, relieve a migraine or sinus headache, and improve circulation.

When muscle strain is present, caused by a sports injury or some sort of accident, a combination of both cold therapy and massage can have a lot of benefits to minimizing pain and discomfort. This treatment, called ice massage, adds the benefit of compression to regular cold therapy. This allows the cold therapy to penetrate the muscle more deeply and effectively. Because of this, ice massage therapy sessions are normally only five to ten minutes, rather than the twenty minutes recommended for regular cold therapy.

Ice massage should be applied to the injured area (especially on ligament, tendon, and muscular injuries) with slow, circular strokes. The key is to start the ice massage as soon as possible after an injury. Do not leave the ice directly on the skin but keep it moving or wrap it in a wet towel. In order to avoid possible skin damage, stop icing once the skin is numb. There are many methods for creating the proper ice for ice therapy, but the easiest, most portable, and most effect method is using a portable ice massager such as the Ice-Up massager. While regular ice cubes can be used, larger pieces of ice are more effective at covering the injured area and truly penetrating the tissue. However, large-enough pieces of ice can be hard to get at home, and are not easy to take with you.

Ice-Up massage therapy products can be taken with you to sporting events to take care of injuries and pain on the spot. The Ice-Up portable carrying cooler keeps the massager frozen for up to ten hours– so you will be as ready to treat injuries at the end of the game as you were at the beginning. Ice-Up can also be kept in the freezer at home to make deep ice massage available to you anytime. The ergonomic design is insulated, making it comfortable use without freezing your fingers and can stay frozen for up to ten hours.

A portable ice massager such as Ice-Up, is a real requirement to have on hand for anybody who takes part in a lot of sporting activities–it is by far one of the best ways to get pain relief right after an injury. At first, ice massage patients will complain of an uncomfortable chill, then a burning sensation, followed by an ache. In the end, they feel total numbness and easing of pain.

When one thinks of weddings, one usually envisions a beautiful bride walking down the aisle with a lovely bouquet of carnations in her hand. Yes, flowers are as much a part of a wedding as the bride and groom themselves. Wedding flowers are expressions of love and have long been considered traditional symbols of holy matrimony.

No wedding is complete without flowers and choosing the right kind for your wedding is a task upon itself. However, in the frantic, pre-wedding preparations rush, brides often end up choosing flowers for their wedding in a hurry; and the result is: blooms that clash violently with the wedding ambience.

The first trick is to remember that matching your wedding gown with your bouquet (or the overall look of your wedding) is a good idea as long as you don’t carry the idea of coordination too far. A beautiful red gown with an exquisite bouquet of red French Tulips might just not be the right idea. Make sure that the wedding flowers you choose are in contrast to your gown, and don’t take the limelight away from you. Allow your wedding flowers to actually compliment your wedding day radiance. For example, if your wedding gown is intricately embroidered or sequined then make sure that you carry simple flowers to enhance the effect of your overall appearance.

The second trick - and something that most brides forget to take into consideration - is making sure that the flowers you choose for your wedding suit the formality of the occasion. A beach wedding would demand flowers suited to the fun ambience, such as exotic orchids, whereas the elegant white Lily of the Valley may be suitable for a traditional church wedding.

The flowers you choose can speak volumes of your feelings and suitably deliver the message you want to give to your beloved. Each and every wedding flower symbolizes a certain emotion; what better way to light up the occasion then to do up your wedding with flowers that hold a special meaning for you? You can ask your wedding planner or check the internet for the special meaning each type of flower holds.

And before everyone - including that annoying aunt who just flew in - convinces you that forget-me-nots are just perfect and make your blue eyes light up and twinkle, please remember that it’s your wedding and it’s a good idea to choose your wedding flowers that appeal to you the most. Make this special wedding day the most memorable day of your life by choosing flowers that speak of your individual tastes and not what trends or traditions dictate.

When your insurance company doesn’t pay for cosmetic surgery because it’s elective, and you don’t have the money in the bank to pay up front, what are your options? Do you have to wait until you save up enough money before you can have the facelift, tummy tuck, or breast uplift that you want? That, of course, depends on your personal financial situation. You do, however, need to check into the options before you even go for your first evaluation.

Depending on the surgeon you choose, it’s possible you may find one who offers a payment plan right in the office. In most cases, this means you pay a certain amount down, and the doctor will agree to accept a set amount in payments each month thereafter. You want to be careful when using this option, because in many cases, the down payment is smaller in order to encourage patients to take advantage of it. However, the monthly payments may be short term, and thus much higher than what you can afford. Although this is not true all the time, it is in many cases. The reason is doctors want their money right away, and as such, they really don’t want to be stuck financing patient bills. Therefore, what they do is make it somewhat attractive by offering a payment plan, but at the same time, discouraging patients from using onsite financing because of the future high payments.

Another option is using your credit card, if you have enough available to finance your cosmetic surgery. Financing this way means you don’t have to pay a down payment, and you have low minimum payments. On the down side, cosmetic surgery is expensive, so you will tie up a good portion of your credit line. Of course, if you are financially sound and have a substantial credit line, it may not have a detrimental effect, especially if you have a card with a lower than average interest rate. If you had planned to pay a down payment, you can also do that and put the balance on your credit card. This will reduce the amount of your credit line that you tie up with your surgery.

A third option is applying for a personal loan at your bank. Of course, for those who have less than perfect credit, they may need to obtain some collateral such as real estate or a motor vehicle, but it’s always possible. If you already have an equity line of credit, you can use that as well, by just writing out a check against your available balance. There are always ways you can come up with the funds you need for different things, including that of cosmetic surgery. You may even choose to take a loan against your 401K plan if you have one, or take a loan against your savings account or other assets you may own. Make certain you know you can obtain the funding before you go any farther than the initial consultation. Make sure you can pay for the surgery before you schedule it and tie up the surgeon’s schedule.

Folding chairs, as the name implies, are lightweight chairs that fold to lie reasonably flat to allow for easier storage and transport. These chairs are generally inexpensive to buy or rent. They are simple to operate and can be set up and taken down quickly, even by people who are physically challenged or who don’t have much stamina.

Folding chairs may be made of plastic, metal, aluminum, or wood. Some of them even have padded seats for extra comfort. They have many uses.

Many people keep a couple of folding chairs around their home to provide extra seats for company. The chairs can be set up when the need arises and stored conveniently in a closet or even under a bed when not in use.

Facilities that cater to patients like hospitals and nursing homes are also beginning to provide these kind of chairs in the patients’ rooms in case extra visitors stop by. Traditionally, most patients’ rooms offered only a single visitor chair. When more than one visitor came to see the patient, the visitors would have to lug extra chairs from other rooms or from the common area. Having a few folding chairs stacked up against a wall or in the closet makes visits easier and more enjoyable for larger families.

Agencies that host meetings like support groups or training seminars often provide these folding chairs for participants to sit in. Because the chairs don’t weigh much, they are easy to reposition as needed. Some seminar leaders, for instance, start with participants sitting in a circle and then have them move their chairs into smaller groups.

Schools, too, use folding chairs as a place for students to sit during lessons, assemblies, meals, etc.

Many corporations also use these chairs. Folding chairs can convert an empty room into a corporate classroom in a few minutes’ time. They can also provide convenient seating for multiple people at staff meetings.

If your corporation sets up booths, for instance at healthcare fairs or career fairs, consider bringing along a couple of these useful chairs. They’ll give your staff members a place to get off their feet and relax during down times. They can also provide a fast, comfortable seat for potential clients or employees.

Folding chairs are also valuable for large events like weddings, receptions, parties, and dances. Although they don’t cost much to purchase, if you need them for a one-time-only event you may be able to rent them. Check out equipment rentals or party rentals in the Yellow Pages.

Although folding chairs are appropriate for most occasions, they do have a few limitations. Very small children may have difficulty climbing into a one of these. In a few cases, chairs have folded with the child in them! Also, people who are very obese may find these chairs uncomfortable. Some folding chairs are designed to support only a certain amount of weight and may collapse if additional weight is added. Before using these kind of chairs for your event, it’s a good idea to find out in advance who will be attending and make other seating arrangements for people who can’t comfortably or safely use the folding chairs.

Thousands of individuals obtain cars from car rental agencies each year, but when it comes to protecting themselves financially while in possession of the car, many individuals have questions about the best way to protect themselves. One of the biggest questions that may be on their mind is whether the rental car insurance supplied by their golden or platinum credit cards is adequate protection against damage or theft of the rental car. Many individuals decline the rental car insurance offered by the rental car company because they believe that the insurance offered by their credit card is enough to handle any issue that may arise. So are they correct?

The short answer is that it depends on the specifics of the insurance offered by the credit card company. There are many credit card companies that claim that if you rent a car using their credit card, they will provide insurance coverage for you for as long as you have the car. For many individuals, this seems like adequate protection for any instances where they need to rent a car. The problem occurs when the individuals fail to read the fine print of their credit card disclosures. Although many credit card companies offer rental car insurance, the actual items covered may vary from company to company.

Reading the disclosures for the rental car insurance portion of the credit card terms and conditions can save an individual a great deal of hassle in the long run. For instance, while some credit card companies claim to offer full coverage insurance for the rental car, it is only valid if the car is rented from a certain car rental agency. The coverage may also be limited to a certain type or class of car, meaning that if any other type or class of car is rented, the coverage will not be valid. Other credit card companies limit their liability to the amount of the deductible of your personal car insurance policy and will not pay above this amount to have the car repaired or replaced, leaving the card owner responsible for the rest of the costs.

Even the credit card companies that offer extensive insurance coverage for rental cars will typically only provide collision and comprehensive coverage for the car, leaving the card holder responsible for any property damage or personal injury costs that may be incurred. Credit card companies also do not typically provide reimbursement for any personal belongings that may be lost if the car is stolen while in the card holder’s possession. It’s a good idea to take any valuables you may have in the car with you. Although the credit card rental car insurance may help the card owner a great deal when an issue arises, a card holder that depends on this insurance alone may find themselves in a tight spot if the insurance does not cover what they think it does. Make sure that you read the fine print and are aware of the coverage that it provides before your next car rental.

Everything was going swimmingly: I got my passport, found a cheap flight, and got my two weeks off of work. I was ready for the ultimate vacation. On a tip from a friend of mine, I decided on a package tour of Meditopia, an island nation often called the jewel of the South Pacific. The brochure sent to me by Meditopia Adventure Travel displayed pristine white sand beaches, lush jungle waterfalls, charming locals, and, strangely, a photograph of their brand new hospital. "Our health care is free to all," the caption under the photo read. An avid scuba diver and lover of nature, this obscure nation seemed to provide it all.

I connected to Meditopia Air flight number 13 from Bangkok, and after sixteen hours of travel, I arrived into Healthiopolis Airport. Customs was a pretty standard procedure, although it was strange when the official seemed disappointed that I did not have any pre-existing medical conditions.

As it turned out, I arrived in the middle of monsoon season. Despite securing a very quick and efficient taxi to the hotel, I was soaking wet and shivering by the time I reached the front desk. I wasn’t going to let some rains dampen my spirit: I celebrated the first night of my vacation with a couple pork dumplings known to be a local delicacy. Before long I was dreaming of the swimming, hiking, and diving I would be doing.

The next morning, I awoke to an intense, pounding headache, a severe sore throat, sweats, and a case of diarrhea the likes of which I never had before. It was terrible, and I wasn’t sure if it was the rain that soaked me or the dumplings I had eaten the night before. There was a knock on my door.
"Meditopia Adventure Travel! I am your guide! Good morning!" a bubbly voice called.
"I am sorry, I’m very sick," I sputtered, opening the door.
"Sir, you are not well!" a portly, amiable looking local said.
"Yes, perhaps I should sleep it off," I tried to close the door, but the guide would not let me.
"We must take you to our brand new hospital, sir,"
"No, no, I don’t have any insurance," I said, "at least none that would be accepted here."
"Sir, you must understand that here, in Meditopia, we pride ourselves in our free health care. Even Yankee travelers such as yourself can get access to our state of the art facilities."

I did not believe him, but before long I found myself in an ambulance, on the way to the hospital. Wrapped in blankets, upon entry to the hospital, I tried to fish out my HMO card, but the exceedingly friendly nurse waved it away. I waited no more than ten minutes before a two Doctors waved me into an examination room. In my feverish delirium, I continued to wave around my insurance card, knowing full well that my plan had no coverage for foreign hospitals. The doctors diagnosed my acute food poisoning, and set me up with a lavish hospital room, as well as a free prescription for the necessary antibiotics. Good lord, I tried to give the staff money every time they visited, but they refused.

I spent my entire vacation recovering in the hospital ward; it was amazing. There wasn’t even any paperwork for me to fill out. This land of Meditopia was the perfect place to get sick. Feeling refreshed, rested, and thankfully, in peak physical condition, I boarded the plane hoping to get sick here, again sometime.

With more people today choosing apartments or smaller homes, the need for a place to store extra belongings that are only needed occasionally is on the rise. People used to store seasonal ornaments and clothing in the attic. With many homes today having nothing more than a crawl space for the attic, people have to find other places to store those items they only use occasionally. This trend of smaller homes–or at least less storage space–has created a boom in the self-storage industry.

For those who are not familiar with self-storage, these are units that you rent on a monthly basis and to which you have access to enter and leave at will within certain specified hours. The gates are often password or keycard activated in such a way that, if you fail to make your monthly payments, you are unable to even enter the gates to your unit. They come in several different sizes with larger units often having entry from both sides to allow easier access to the other end of the storage unit.

Self-storage units are convenient for storing those extras that you do not use frequently, but lack storage space when not in use. This includes such items as Christmas trees and ornaments, seasonal equipment and clothing, and even furniture you are not currently using. As long as you pay your storage fee each month, you are the only one with access to the unit. However, payment default allows management the authority to cut off your lock and replace it with another one. After thirty days, most self-storage facilities will place the contents of your unit up for auction.

With a self-storage unit, you can also purchase insurance through the facility that will cover your belongings each month. Of course, if you have homeowners’ insurance, you may not need this additional protection. Check your policy to see how far your insurance covers your belongings and whether it covers things stored in locations other than your home. If it does, there is no need for you to purchase additional insurance.

One problem that you are up against with a self-storage facility is that there is no actual contract, and as such, they can raise the rent on your unit any time they so choose. This doesn’t mean they WILL do it, but there is nothing legally you can do to stop them. You rent the units on a monthly basis, so therefore, the facility is free to raise the rent on you with little more than thirty days’ notice. For those who live in apartments, there is probably no other alternative, but for homeowners who simply lack space in their homes, it is likely to be more economical to purchase a storage building for their back yard.

Self-storage units are certainly an alternative to getting rid of a great deal of stuff you seldom use, but they are certainly not a sound economic move if other possibilities exist. They are, however, a growing market, and one that is being utilized by people and businesses alike.
